There are a lot of international students looking for work in Canada! These students are ready to work! Here are some things that you should know when considering whether you would like to hire international students.
What international students need in order to work off campus:
- Valid Social Insurance Number
- Study Permit that does not prevent off-campus work
- Must be enrolled full time in a Designated Learning Institution – part time students are not eligible to work unless they are in their last semester and students on authorized leave from their studies are not eligible to work
How many hours can international students work off campus?
- While studying, students can work up to 24 hours off campus
- There is no limit on the number of hours that students can work while on official breaks (summer holidays, winter holidays, reading week) as long as the student is scheduled for full time studies both before and after the break
Why should I consider hiring international students?
- Reliability: Students are motivated to work in order to support themselves financially while adapting to life in a new country. This drive ensures they are committed to showing up for their scheduled shifts.
- Cost Savings: Students can help reduce overtime expenses. By working 20-24 hours per week, they stay within the legal limits, preventing overtime pay and helping lower payroll costs.
- Transferable Skills: Many students bring valuable skills and experience from their home countries that align with the needs of Canadian employers, offering a fresh perspective and potential for growth.
- Referral Network: International students often have connections with others seeking similar job opportunities. If you’re satisfied with their performance, they are likely to refer friends who are also looking for work.
