How to Make a Good Impression at a Job Interview

Making a good impression is essential when attending that all-important job interview. Some studies suggest that interviewers form an opinion based on what they see in the first three seconds of meeting you – that doesn’t give you much time to win them round! Follow these steps to ensure you make a good impression at your job interview.

1. DRESS APPROPRIATELY

How you dress for an interview will depend on the job you are applying for. A smart suit may be appropriate attire when applying for an office-based position, but not necessarily the best choice for manual labour positions. Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the job you are applying for. Avoid trying to impress with bright colours and high-fashion clothes (unless you are applying for a job in fashion), as interviewers generally tend to prefer a more muted, slightly conservative look.

2. ARRIVE A FEW MINUTES EARLY

You should aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before your allotted interview time; this shows an attitude of respect for your potential employer, and gives the impression of being highly organized. However, avoid arriving too early (anything more than 15 minutes), as this can be interpreted negatively by interviewers. If possible, try to arrive in the area about 30-45 minutes before your interview, and find a café nearby where you can have a coffee and compose yourself ready for the interview.

3. STAY RELAXED

Do a few deep breathing exercises while you wait for the interview to start, and try to focus on relaxing and staying calm. Interviewers pick up on subtle signs; if they sense that you feel uneasy, they will feel uneasy too.

4. BE YOURSELF

Be open about who you are. Don’t pretend to be someone that you’re not: it will create an impression that lacks authenticity and genuineness. Furthermore, if you get the job, it will be very tiring trying to keep up the act for the rest of your working life! Admit to your faults, but try to put a positive spin on them.
